ALIGNING PEOPLE WITH PURPOSE

CONFIRMING STRATEGY

A situation that we often encounter is when a client is having trouble executing their strategy. The direction and strategy, themselves, seem to be clear but things aren't moving forward as fast as they would like. This can be a result of some members of the executive or management team having lingering reservations about direction or strategic priorities.

Here's an example of how that changed for one group we worked with:

The group had been struggling for over a year to agree on the priority to be placed on different potential projects. As a consequence, they had made little forward progress during that time.

In one morning, we helped the group to identify all potential projects and to agree on the prioritization as shown in the chart on the right.

Projects A, I, L, H and J are now well underway - with the full confidence and support of the whole group.

ALIGNING STAKEHOLDERS

The participants in a stakeholder alignment workshop represent different "layers" of the business relationship - for example customers, distributors and company personnel.

We use an anonymous opinion-polling tool to show how each layer views issues and priorities. Participants see the results right away prompting lively, open discussion.

A stakeholder alignment workshop leaves participants feeling that they have become part of something bigger. For the client company, it is an opportunity to build relationships that cannot easily be duplicated by competitors.

FINE-TUNING THE BALANCED SCORECARD

Bob Kaplan and David Norton significantly changed how companies view and measure performance with their development of the Balanced Scorecard in the early and mid 1990's.

Many companies have made a substantial investment in introducing a Balanced Scorecard approach to their own organizations and, at this stage, often need help in areas such as:

  • assessing program effectiveness,
  • updating models to reflect a changed emphasis on, for example, risk and control,
  • fine-tuning processes,
  • training or retraining employees, and
  • linking pay practices to the Scorecard.
